There are two universal practices so common, nearly everyone does them, and thinks nothing of it. They are, however, akin to practicing black magic on yourself.
The first is complaining. If you’ve read any of the stuff I’ve posted about the ego, you know that the ego doesn’t see reality, it perceives and interprets through it’s own rose colored glasses. It sees life through the distortions of it’s wounds, judgements, and preferences. So of course every ego thinks it is right. Ego is also reactive and quarrelsome. It has to fight, it lives on reaction and busyness. If ego gets it’s tail stepped on; if it thinks that anyone, or life is unfair in any way, it is typical to voice complaint.
Complaining is the opposite of aware consciousness, what we need for awakening. Complaining is going to sleep, a turning off of awareness. All complaining does is keep you cemented in the mire of your self pity. It is just a habit that ingrains your ego mind more solidly.
Watch a chronic complainer. They slip into pain and distress, like slipping into a groove of misery. Watch their faces, the sighs, the way one walks, holds their body. They are in pain, carrying a weight. Complaining activates pain and pain crimps the nervous system, and makes one leave the body.
Tedious as Hell
It’s easy to see in others: complaining is tedious, hum drum, and boring. It pollutes the air and is far worse than a barking dog, or noisy kids. Complaining destroys intimate relationships. Watch it closely.
What is one trying to do with complaining? Maybe they want validation, or sympathy. Frequently complaining is such an unconscious habit one isn’t even aware they are doing it. But every time one complains they’re just cementing their ego perceptions more deeply.
The Ego’s Credo: It’s not fair.
Be careful when you say these words, either out loud or silently. It means you have fallen asleep and slipped into the habitual world of ego pain.
Watch your mind when these words materialize, and see how it feels in your body.
Complaining is akin to black magic against yourself because it will instantly hurt you, just as if you pulled a switch. If you want more misery for yourself, and want to spread misery, by all means complain.
